Macarena was originally a Spanish dance song by Los del Río (versions vary about when the song was originally released) about a woman of the same name. The story goes that the group was invited to tour South America in March 1992 and during their stay, was invited to a private party. At the party, a local flamenco teacher, Diana Patricia Cubilln Herrera, performed for the guests and the Los Del Rio duo was impressed. Antonio Romero Monge, of the group, recited the song's chorus-to-be on the spot, as a tribute to the dancer but calling her Magdalena.
